Warning: I blew $220 on a cheap ground penetrating radar kit and it found nothing but rocks
Everyone in my local club keeps saying you need to spend big on gear to find anything good, but I went the other way last March and picked up a $220 GPR unit off a guy in Tulsa. I ran it over a known camp site near Beaver, Oklahoma for two full days and it pinged on every chunk of sandstone while missing a fire pit my buddy found with a $40 probe. So tell me, is cheap geophysics gear ever worth it, or did I just pay to learn that lesson the hard way?
Did you check if the thing was even calibrated right? I did the same dumb thing two winters back, grabbed a $180 unit off Craigslist from some guy in Enid who swore it worked great. Took it to a spot along the Cimarron where I know there's old stuff buried and it screamed on every root and beer can while totally missing a trash pit I'd already marked. My buddy's $60 pinpointer and a shovel did more in an hour than that fancy box did all weekend. What got me was the guy ghosted me right after, go figure. Cheap gear can work sometimes but with radar you're mostly buying a toy unless you drop real money, that's just how it goes I guess.
