Bailed on Chamber of Commerce mixers for local Meetup groups

After 6 months of paying $300 for Chamber events where nobody talked to anyone new, I switched to a small Phoenix Meetup group for tech founders. First meetup I landed two solid referrals just by chatting about what I actually do. Has anyone else found better luck with casual groups over the official ones?

The Chamber crowd is mostly paying to feel important, not to actually help anyone so the Meetup crowd is way more genuine. Good leads come from real conversations not name tags.

Hows come nobody talks about the fact that the Chamber crowd actually has the budget to move on things? Like yeah theyre stuffy and the small talk is brutal but when they say theyre interested they can actually write a check. Meetup groups are full of people still figuring out their business model and half of them vanish after two months. Different tools for different jobs I guess.

So basically pay $300 for lukewarm coffee and a handshake?
