Hot take: the free mixer at the Tempe chamber event was a waste of my whole Tuesday night
I went to a Tuesday night mixer at a spot near Mill Ave in Tempe last week, paid $15 to park, and walked into a room of about 40 people where nobody was trading real leads. I stood by the snack table for 25 minutes and every single person I met just pitched their insurance or their MLM, so I grabbed my badge and left early. The next morning I called two of the contacts who seemed normal and set up one on ones at a coffee shop instead, and both turned into actual referral talks. Here is my beef: big open mixers in this valley are mostly noise, and the small 4 person coffee chats are where deals really happen. So I stopped going to the big events and started building a list of 12 people I meet with one on one each month. Who else here has ditched the giant networking mixers for smaller meetups, and where in the East Valley are you finding the good ones?
