I finally checked out that new networking spot in Tempe
Went to The Grid coworking space off Apache last Tuesday for their weekly mixer. Was always skeptical of those paid meetups but a buddy kept pushing me to go. There were about 40 people there and I ended up swapping numbers with three contractors who actually need sub work on commercial jobs. Has anyone else tried that place on a slow weekday?

You said "finally checked out" but I think you mean it's been there for like two years now. They moved into that spot where the old indie coffee shop used to be by the 101. I went there last March and it was mostly freelancers in hoodies staring at laptops, not really a mixer vibe. Glad you caught it on a decent night though, Tuesdays are hit or miss with the crowd size depending on what's going on at ASU.

You said "Tuesdays are hit or miss," but what exactly makes a Tuesday hit versus miss at that place? Like is it just random luck or is there some kind of pattern to it, like when ASU has a big game or something happening on campus? I've been to a few spots near the 101 where the whole vibe shifts depending on whether there's a game or not. Last time I tried a Tuesday there it was dead, but I've heard other people say it was packed. So what's the secret, is it tied to some calendar I don't know about?

Yeah exactly, the Tuesday things a total crapshoot. I actually went on a Tuesday too and it was dead, like three guys with notebooks and one of them was napping on the couch. But a friend dragged me back on a Saturday and it was completely different, live music out back and people actually talking to each other instead of just staring at their phones. I think the trick is to go on a night when they have an event, like open mic or trivia. Otherwise you're just paying for overpriced cold brew and awkward silence. Glad you had a good time though, good to know there's still hope for that spot.
