PSA: A guy at a Mesa mixer told me 70% of local B2B deals start from a referral, not a cold call
I went to a Tuesday night mixer in Mesa last week and got talking to a commercial insurance broker. He said he tracked his own closed deals for two years and 7 out of 10 came from someone he already knew, not from cold outreach. That surprised me because I have been dumping hours into cold email and getting maybe a 2% reply rate. He said the guys who win here just show up to the same 3 or 4 groups every single time and let people get to know them. Has anyone else here actually tracked where their deals come from, or is that just something people say at mixers?
Used to roll my eyes at advice like this. Figured referrals were just something lucky people got and the rest of us had to grind it out with cold outreach. Then I actually sat down and looked at my own closed deals last year and it was almost the same split, most of my money came from people I already knew or someone they passed me to. Cold email was eating up my whole week for scraps. Hearing 7 out of 10 from that broker doesn't even shock me now, it lines up with what I saw when I finally bothered to track it.
