Unpopular opinion: That Phoenix BNI chapter was a total waste of my Thursday mornings

I went to a BNI meeting in Chandler for 6 weeks straight back in February. Paid $75 just for the visitor fees and got exactly zero referrals out of it. All they did was hawk their own services and fight over who talks first. Am I missing something or are these groups just a way to sell $40 memberships to people who already know each other?

Exactly this - the internal power games are the whole point, not the referrals. It's like paying dues to be a background character in someone else's reality show.

Three Thursdays in a row I sat through a Gilbert chapter where the same plumber passed out his calendar to everyone except me. I used to think BNI was just misunderstood and people didn't try hard enough, but that experience totally flipped my opinion. It's basically a clique that charges you to watch them network with each other while you sit there like a fool with your business cards. The whole thing felt like a sales pitch for the chapter itself, not actual help for anyone new trying to get leads. I walked away convinced it's more about their internal power games than any real referral system.

Isn't that just paying money to be ignored by the popular kids?
