Warning: A guy at the Tempe mixer told me to stop collecting business cards, and I think he was onto something
I went to a networking mixer in Tempe last Thursday, the one at the hotel near Mill Ave, and I ended up talking to a commercial real estate guy named Dev for like 20 minutes. I told him my usual thing, that I hit three events a month and leave with 40 or 50 cards every time, and I felt pretty good about it. He just looked at me and asked how many of those 50 people I could actually call by name three weeks later. I started counting in my head and got to maybe 4, which was pretty embarrassing. He told me he only talks to two or three people at every event now and spends the rest of the night going deep with them, and he has closed deals off those same 5 contacts for years. I tried it at a Chandler thing last week and only grabbed 3 cards, but I already have coffee set up with two of them. So am I crazy, or has everyone else just been hoarding cards and calling it networking too?
