Found out my kitchen sponge was basically a bacteria hotel
I read this article yesterday that said a kitchen sponge can have more bacteria than a toilet seat, like up to 10 million per square inch. I've been using the same sponge for weeks just rinsing it off. Should I really be tossing them every week or is there a way to sanitize them that actually works?

Boiling them sounds like a whole other disaster waiting to happen.

Oh my friend Sarah found this out the hard way. She had this sponge that she'd been using for like a month, just rinsing it with hot water. She got this really bad case of food poisoning and the doctor asked if she was wiping her counters with anything old and gross. Turned out that sponge was basically a science experiment, she said it smelled like rotten eggs when she finally threw it away. I microwave mine for two minutes every few days, but honestly I just buy the cheap packs now and swap them out weekly.

My cousin was so paranoid about this she started boiling her sponge in a pot of water on the stove. One time she forgot about it, the water boiled off, and the sponge caught fire. Set off the smoke alarm, whole apartment smelled like burnt plastic for days. Now she just buys those little scrub brushes with the replaceable heads and calls it good.
