Got a weird piece of advice from a cashier at a hardware store in Phoenix

I was buying caulk for a bathroom remodel and this older guy at the register just looked at me and said, 'you're gonna mess that up, aren't you?'... I laughed but he was right. He spent 5 minutes telling me to cut the tip at a 45 degree angle instead of straight across. I tried it on the first bead and it actually worked way better than anything I'd seen online. Has anyone else gotten random tips from strangers that ended up being spot on?
