Got lectured by a stranger at the grocery line about my reusable bags

Last Tuesday at the Piggly Wiggly on Market Street, this older guy behind me starts counting my 7 bags and says I'm 'hoarding plastic for no reason.' I told him they were cotton tote bags I've used for 2 years, and he goes, 'Well, cotton takes more water to make than plastic, so you're worse.' I just stared at him for a second and paid for my stuff. Has anyone else been ambushed by random eco-math while trying to check out?
