Guy at the DMV counter asked me one question about my license photo and it messed me up
I was at the DMV on Spring Street a couple weeks back renewing my license, and the guy behind the counter, older dude with glasses, asked me why I picked the photo I picked. I laughed it off and said it was just the least bad one. He said most folks pick the picture where they look the most put together, not the one where they look the most like themselves, and then he pointed at my old photo and said "that guy looks like he's applying for something, this new one looks like you." I sat in the parking lot for ten minutes after. It's a dumb thing to get stuck on but it made me wonder how many choices I make every day just to look right to people who aren't even looking. I went home and looked at my profile pics on like four apps and every single one is the staged version. Has anyone else had a total stranger clock them like that over something small? I still don't know what to do with it but I can't stop thinking about it.
It's wild how we all do this without even knowing it. Like we're performing for some audience that doesn't exist, and then one random person points it out and suddenly you can't unsee it. I caught myself doing the same thing with my work badge photo last month.
