Hot take: Is it rude to ask someone their salary on a first date?

I went out with this girl in Austin last month, and about 20 minutes in she flat out asked what I make a year. I was kinda thrown off but told her around 65k. She didn't say much after that and the date fizzled. On one hand I get wanting to know if someone is financially stable, but on the other it felt like a job interview. Has anyone else dealt with that kind of question early on?

Told my sister-in-law I was switching jobs and she pulled up her laptop right there at the dinner table to show me her retirement calculator. Had to gently remind her I hadn't even ordered my drink yet. What finally worked was flat out saying "let's table the financial talk until after we eat" and then changing the subject to her dog. People usually take the hint if you're direct but not mean about it.
