I finally asked my barber why he charges more for a beard trim than a haircut

I was getting a cut last Friday and just came out with it... he said a good beard trim takes more focus and precision, like 15 minutes of careful detail work versus the 25 minutes for a standard cut. He said one wrong move with the clippers on a beard line is way more obvious. It made me realize I'd never thought about the skill difference before, I just saw the higher price on the menu. Has anyone else had a simple question change how you see a routine service?

Disagree completely, it's just a way to charge more for less work. A haircut uses clippers, scissors, and takes way longer overall. Trimming a beard is just cleaning up lines you already have, maybe five minutes with a trimmer guard. They know guys will pay it because a bad beard line feels like a bigger deal in the moment, so they put a premium on that worry. It's smart business but let's not pretend it's more skilled labor.

Ever notice how this works with anything seen as "detail" work? Like, a basic car wash is cheap but cleaning the inside costs way more, even though it's just wiping things down. They charge for the focus it needs, not the time. Same with a barber charging for the beard worry, like you said.

So you're saying @terry_wood51, it's all about the mental cost?
