I finally figured out I was sharpening my chisels backwards this whole time
Been woodworking on and off for about 6 years, mostly small stuff like birdhouses and shelves. Last month I was at a friend's shop in Portland and he watched me hone a chisel for like two seconds before going "wait, you're dragging the edge, not pushing it." I had been pulling the blade toward me the entire time, which actually rounds the cutting edge instead of flattening it. No wonder every project felt like I was fighting the tool and my cuts kept tearing out. Has anyone else had a basic skill moment where somebody just had to say one thing and you instantly knew you'd been doing it wrong for years?
