My garage door spring snapped at 6 AM on a Saturday
I was heading out to grab coffee and the whole thing came crashing down. The tension cable whipped around and took out a plastic storage bin full of christmas decorations. I ended up calling a guy from Tulsa who fixed it in 45 minutes for $220, but now I'm paranoid every time I open it. Has anyone else had a spring fail at the worst possible time?

Yeah the cable whipping around is the scary part. Replace both springs at once next time.

Is it really that serious though? I mean yeah it sucks when stuff breaks but it's a garage door spring not a bomb. These things are designed to snap under stress and that's exactly what it did. You got it fixed fast for a reasonable price and no one got hurt. The christmas decorations were probably full of dust and half broken already anyway. I would just open it normally and not think twice about it. Life's too short to be paranoid over a mechanical part that did exactly what it was supposed to do.
