My laptop fried itself because I kept it on my bed for 6 months straight
Was in my apartment in Columbus last Tuesday and my laptop just shut off mid-zoom call. Smelled like burning plastic. Opened it up and the fan was completely clogged with dust and lint from my blanket. Had to spend $180 on a new motherboard at a repair shop on High Street. Anyone else wreck a laptop by ignoring basic air flow?

180 bucks for a motherboard on High Street sounds about right. I've seen this a million times in Columbus people treating their electronics like furniture. It's the same pattern as folks not changing their car's oil or ignoring a weird noise from their furnace. We all get lazy about maintenance until something expensive breaks.

My buddy out in Hilliard had this exact thing happen with his gaming PC last year. He kept ignoring the random shutdowns for months (figured it was just Windows updates or something) until one day it just wouldn't boot. Took it to a shop on Olentangy and they said the motherboard was toast and he needed a new one for like $200. He still complains about it every time we play online together.

Started checking my PSU with a multimeter after the third shutdown and caught it early.
