Paper maps versus GPS on a road trip through West Virginia last fall

I drove from Charleston to Beckley on Route 60 and my phone lost signal about 10 miles in. Pulled over and grabbed my old Rand McNally atlas from under the seat, and it got me through every twisty back road without a hitch. GPS is great until you're in a dead zone, you know? Has anyone else found paper maps actually more reliable in remote areas?

Oh absolutely, I've been in that same spot before. Drove through the Ozarks a few years back and my GPS kept trying to send me down logging roads, but the old folded-up state map never let me down once.

That "pulled over and grabbed my old Rand McNally" part got me. I think paper maps actually make you a better driver because you have to memorize the route instead of just staring at a screen.

Question whether memorizing a map really makes you a better driver.
