Question about choosing between a free forum platform or paying for a custom one

I picked the free option for my 'Ask Anything' community and it tanked after 3 months because the ads drove everyone away. Anyone else regret going the cheap route for their discussion board?

Totally get this. Used to believe free was fine for starting out. Watched a friend's book club forum die because those flashing banner ads made it feel so cheap and spammy. Now I see paying for a clean space is the real cost of building trust. Makes you wonder if saving that monthly fee is ever worth killing your community's vibe, right?

Used to believe a free platform was just a smart way to test an idea. Watching those intrusive ads scare off real discussion showed me the actual price. The monthly fee is basically paying for a place where people actually want to stay.

How many people actually stick around when a forum looks like a pop-up ad graveyard? My hiking group's first page had an auto-play video ad for dish soap right next to the trail safety tips. It just screamed "we don't care about your experience here.
