Spent $75 on a detailed background check service
I needed to verify some info for a project and figured a paid service would be thorough. It basically just repackaged the free first page of Google results. Has anyone found a background check that actually digs deeper without costing a fortune?

That "repackaged free results" thing is so true. I got burned once looking up an old roommate. The trick is to search the actual public records sites yourself, like your county court's online case search. It's clunky but free. I found small claims stuff and property records that way that no paid service ever showed me.

Man, you're totally right. I used to think those paid background check sites were the only real option. But @bens81 is spot on about going straight to the source. I spent an afternoon digging through my own county's property records portal and found way more detail on liens and sales history than any service ever gave me. It's a bit of a pain to learn each site's system, but the info is there and it's actually complete. Changed my whole view on how this stuff works.
