Mine went out on a Sunday morning last winter, 4 AM, same deal. I mean, the bucket thing works for a little while but you're gonna want to shut the water off at the main valve right away before your whole basement floods. Also, if you can get to a hardware store later, a cheap wet/dry shop vac is way better than a mop bucket for getting the last inch of water off the floor. That's what I ended up doing, just sucked it all up into the driveway.

Yeah, the "sucked it into the driveway" part is key. Nobody talks about how dumping that water outside in winter is a death wish. @sageross, you probably already know this, but if that water hits the driveway and freezes, you got a skating rink. My neighbor did that and his mailman slipped and fell. Just a heads up for anyone else dealing with this. Better to dump it in a utility sink or a toilet if you can.

the bucket thing works for a little while" lol that's basically my whole life philosophy right there. I'd probably just give up and let the basement become a pool at that point, honestly.
