My phone told me I walked 500 miles in a year just going to the fridge

Checked my step tracker app yesterday and it said I hit 500 miles total for the year. The weird part is, I work from home and my longest trips are to the kitchen. Is this normal for a mostly indoor life, or is my tracker just making stuff up?

Honestly, the bigger mind-bender for me is how they even calculate that distance. They take your average stride length and multiply it by steps, right? But my stride to the fridge at 2 am is a sleepy shuffle, and my stride to answer the door is a full sprint. It's all getting mashed into one number. So you might have "walked" 500 miles, but it was probably 400 miles of tiny kitchen shuffles and 100 miles of actual pacing.

Trackers count all movement, not just big walks. Pacing while on a phone call, shifting your weight while standing at a desk, even those little trips to check the mail add up. My own step count is high from just circling my living room when I'm thinking through a work problem. The distance seems huge, but it's probably a bunch of tiny movements your phone logged all year long.

Yeah, @caseyc78, my phone once logged steps while I was just chopping veggies.
