Old guy at the hardware store told me something i'll never forget

I was at an Ace Hardware in Austin about 4 years ago looking for a specific bolt and this 70 year old employee walked me right to it. He said "son, the right tool for the job is the one you already own" and then showed me how to use a zip tie as a replacement for a missing clip. Has anyone else had a random stranger just drop some practical wisdom on you out of nowhere?

Yep, old dudes at hardware stores are basically the Library of Congress for life hacks.

Oh man, the real gold is asking them about stuff they messed up. Learned more from one guy's story about a shed he built that collapsed than any YouTube video. They'll tell you exactly which screws strip out easy and what caulk brands are total garbage. Plus they remember every code change from the last 40 years. That knowledge about what NOT to do saves you way more time than the official instructions ever will.
