Overheard a guy at the DMV in Boise say 'I just ask, worst they can do is say no' and it changed how I handle awkward stuff
I was waiting at the DMV on Cole Road in Boise last week and this older guy next to me called a hotel and talked them into knocking $40 off his room just by asking nicely. I always assumed you had to take the first price or answer you get, but he just asked and they said yes. What is something you got just by asking that you were sure would be a no?
My success rate with asking is roughly zero percent, so I'm not the guy to learn from here. Last month I asked my landlord if I could pay rent two days late and he just stared at me until I walked away. I once asked a TSA guy if I still had to take my shoes off and he said "yes" like I'd just asked something insane. Honestly my problem is I only work up the nerve to ask for stuff that was never on the table to begin with. I need to find the Boise DMV guy and take notes.
