I quit fabric softener about 2 years ago after my roommate (a textile science nerd) told me it basically coats towels in wax. At first my towels felt kinda rough, but after a few wash cycles they actually started soaking up water like they should. I also stopped using dryer sheets around the same time and switched to wool dryer balls with a drop of peppermint oil. Now my towels don't just push water around my skin, they actually dry me off in one pass. It's wild how much of a difference it makes once you stop fighting the fabric with all that gunk.

Right? It's like we've been scammed by big softener this whole time... all those years of thinking my towels were just "broken" or something. Never thought about how the waxy coating was the actual problem, just figured I needed to buy more expensive towels. Now my shirts probably feel the same way after I stopped soaking them in that stuff too. Crazy how we all just accepted that fabric softener was a necessity when really it was just making everything worse.

Wait, did I just spend the last ten years of my life basically waxing my laundry like a fancy hardwood floor? That explains why my "fluffy" towels were somehow repelling water like a duck's back. Man, I've been out here paying for the privilege of making my clothes feel worse, what a genius move on my part.
