Tried to fix my own garbage disposal after watching YouTube videos and made a mess of it

Last Saturday I decided to save $150 by fixing the jammed garbage disposal in my kitchen myself. I watched three different tutorials and thought I had it figured out, but when I stuck the hex wrench in the bottom, I ended up cracking the whole housing instead. Water sprayed everywhere under the sink, and I had to shut off the valve quick before it flooded the cabinet. My wife was not happy, and I had to call a plumber anyway who charged me $200 to replace the unit. He told me I should have just bought a new one from my own hardware store for $90 and let him install it. I think the popular opinion that you can DIY anything with YouTube is mostly wrong for plumbing. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way with a simple home repair?

DIY anything with YouTube" is a dangerous lie, honestly.

Then you end up with an IKEA bookcase that's basically modern art.
