Update: Overheard a client say 'a good deal means you never ask questions' while I was quoting a tree removal.
That stuck with me, because in my line of work, a good deal is when you ask all the right ones first. Has anyone else had a simple comment completely shift how you approach things?

My buddy's mechanic said the same thing once.

Wait, your buddy's mechanic actually said that? I've heard some wild stuff from shops, like telling people they need a whole new transmission for a simple sensor. Did he try to sell your buddy a full engine rebuild for an oil change?

Mechanics get a bad rap sometimes. Elizabethn56, your buddy's guy might have been seeing something everyone else missed. A weird noise or a small leak can point to a bigger problem down the road. It's their job to warn people before a cheap fix turns into a huge bill. Sure, some shops are shady, but a good mechanic saves you money by being honest about the worst case.
