What a guy at the hardware store said about my ladder choice
I was at Ace Hardware in Tulsa last month picking out a new extension ladder. I had my eye on a cheap $80 fiberglass one. Then this older guy stocking shelves saw me and asked what I was using it for. I said just cleaning gutters. He pointed out the cheap one only had a 200 pound rating and I'd be pushing it with my tool belt on. He showed me a $140 Werner with a 300 pound rating and explained the difference in the rung locks. That minute of talk made me spend the extra money and honestly I feel way safer now. Has anyone else had a stranger talk them out of a bad buy?

Got a similar tip years ago from a guy at a used car lot, not even someone in my field. He just said "if you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." Drove me crazy at first because it sounded so cliche. But then I thought about all the times I'd learned something real from someone who actually knew their stuff, versus just nodding along with people who were guessing like me. Really changed how I pick my projects and who I listen to. So yeah, your mileage may vary, but sometimes the best advice comes from the most random people at the worst times.
