Why does nobody tell you that asking the dumb question first actually works?
Two years ago I started a new job at a warehouse in Fresno. First week there, my trainer Miguel pulled me aside and said the best thing I could do was ask every question that popped into my head, even the ones that made me feel stupid. I thought he was just being nice.
So I did it. Asked how to read the scanner codes. Asked why some pallets go left and some go right. Asked what the red tape on the floor actually meant. Felt like an idiot for about a month.
Turns out I learned the whole floor in 6 weeks while the other new guy who tried to figure it out on his own was still guessing at month 3. Miguel was right. The dumb question is way faster than the silent mistake.
What's the best piece of advice a coworker or trainer gave you that sounded too simple to matter?
