Drove two hours to a dark sky park and my camera battery died before the Milky Way even rose

I was at Cherry Springs State Park, all set up for a perfect shot, and the low battery warning flashed right as the sky got dark. Had to pack up and drive home with zero photos. Anyone else ever have a trip totally ruined by forgetting to charge a battery?

Used to think spare batteries were overkill, but a dead camera at the Grand Canyon changed my mind real fast.

Right?! It's ALWAYS a Grand Canyon or Joshua Tree situation that teaches you the hard way. My Canon died right as the Milky Way started showing at Big Bend. Now I have a little pouch with two spares that never leaves my bag, plus I tape a piece of paper on the inside with the charge date so I don't grab a dead one by mistake. It's such a small thing but it ABSOLUTELY saves a trip.

Carry three fully charged batteries in my bag now after missing sunset at Joshua Tree. I also keep a small power bank in the car to give a dead battery a quick emergency boost, which saved me once.
