Guy at a star party in Tucson said my Milky Way shots looked like soup, so I tried something dumb
I drove out to a dark site near Tucson two weekends ago with my old Canon and a cheap 50mm lens. After I showed him my first stacked shot, this older guy named Walt looked at it for a second and said, "that's soup, son, where's your focus." I was shooting wide open at f/1.8 because I thought more light meant a better picture. He grabbed my camera, zoomed into live view, and dialed it to f/2.8, then told me to tape the focus ring down so it wouldn't creep. I reshot the same patch of sky and the difference was night and day, actual stars instead of bloated blobs. Now I stop down two clicks no matter how dark it is out there. What aperture do you all actually shoot your wide field stuff at?
