Showerthought: The guy who said I was photographing the wrong nebula was actually right

I spent 3 months imaging the Veil Nebula from my backyard in Ohio, and a random dude on a forum said I should switch to the Orion Nebula because my light pollution was killing the detail. He was totally right, my Orion shots came out crisp after just 2 nights of stacking frames. Has anyone else gotten a tip from a stranger that totally flipped your approach to astrophotography?

Hold up. You spent 3 whole months on the Veil Nebula and some random person just said "switch to Orion" and it worked in 2 nights? 3 months is a long time to feel like you are wasting your time. That must have stung but also felt like a relief at the same time. I would have been mad at first but then thankful after seeing those crisp frames. Did you ever go back and try the Veil again after you got better with Orion?

Same thing happened to me with M31 years ago. Spent weeks failing before I realized my polar alignment was off by a mile. Sometimes you just need a fresh set of eyes or a completely different target to shake things loose.

Man, I knew a guy who spent six months on Andromeda before someone told him he was pointing at a streetlight.
