That cheap tripod I bought off Amazon collapsed on my camera at a dark sky site near Julian, California
I figured a $40 tripod would be fine for my little DSLR, but I got up to leave and the leg just buckled. My camera took a tumble onto the gravel and I spent the next hour trying to blow dust out of the lens mount. Anyone else learned the hard way that cheap tripods are a gamble with expensive gear on top?

Bought a used Manfrotto for $60 on Craigslist and never looked back.

And honestly that's the way to go with tripods. New ones are way overpriced for what they are. A used Manfrotto will outlast most new stuff you can buy in a store. I picked up a beat up one from a garage sale for like 40 bucks and it's still going strong years later. Just give it a good cleaning and tighten the screws and it's as good as new.
