Chose between blending a quarter panel or replacing it on a 2019 Civic in Reno
Last Tuesday a customer brought in a 2019 Civic with a creased quarter panel and I had to decide between blending the paint on the spot or ordering a full replacement skin. I blended it to save him about $400 and three days, but the metallic flake never quite matched under the shop lights at 3pm. Has anyone here had luck color matching Honda's Platinum White Pearl without going full panel?
Platinum White Pearl is a three stage paint, not a standard base coat with pearl thrown in. That means the match problem you ran into isn't really about the flake size, it's that you skipped the mid coat. Honda sprays a pearl layer between the white base and the clear, and if you try to blend that into the original finish the flake will read wrong from every angle except straight on. Under shop lights at 3pm you were probably seeing the pearl layer catch light that your blend didn't have. Some guys get lucky tinting the base and adding pearl to the clear, but on a 2019 the factory finish is still fresh enough that a mismatch shows. Full panel is usually the safer call on tri-coats, even if it eats the profit.
