My 3M sanding disc holder snapped right in the middle of a quarter panel
I was blocking out a 2021 F-150 bed side in the shop yesterday, putting some real pressure on it, and the plastic just gave out. It was the hook and loop kind, maybe a year old, but I guess the heat and flex got to it. What do you guys use that can take a beating, or is this just a normal wear thing I should expect every so often?

That's a real pain when a tool fails mid-job! @the_lucas is right that plastic gets brittle, but a year seems pretty short for a pro-grade tool. The constant heat from friction and flexing from pressure are definitely the killers. I've had way better luck with the ones that have a metal backing plate, they cost a bit more but don't warp or snap. It's worth the upgrade to avoid stopping work.

Are we really acting like a plastic scraper failing after a year is some kind of crisis? I mean, come on, it's a piece of plastic, not a kidney. Tools break, you grab another one from the drawer and move on. The whole "upgrade to metal" advice feels like overkill for something that probably costs less than a lunch. Is it really worth getting worked up over a five dollar part?

Plastic just gets brittle after a while, especially with heat. It's not like you're losing a finger, just grab another pad. Stuff breaks when you work it hard, that's pretty normal.
