Old school vs new school on plastic welding repairs

I used to just plastic weld bumper cracks with a standard soldering iron and a roll of zip ties back in 2018, but now I use a proper plastic welder with the correct filler rods from Dura-Fix. The old way worked okay for a quick fix on my buddy's Honda Civic in Denver, but the new stuff holds up way better under heat and stress. What's your take on plastic welding - are the expensive kits worth it or is the cheap method fine for most jobs?

Honestly, prep work is like 90% of it. The cheap way works fine if you take your time.

Does anybody else think the difference is more about how well you prep the surface than the actual tool you're using? lol I've seen guys do amazing work with a soldering iron if they took the time to clean and rough up the crack first.
