Old timer in Toledo made me rethink my paint prep
Met a retired guy at a swap meet in Toledo last weekend, he pointed at my DA sander and said I was making dust instead of cutting. He showed me a 30 year old scratch test trick with a 5 dollar pen, and now I'm second guessing every panel I've done the last 3 years. Has anyone else had a total stranger simplify something you thought you had mastered?

That thing about making dust instead of cutting hit home. My buddy Rick paints classic cars on the side and he spent years just chasing shiny primer with his DA, thought he was doing it right. Then he had some old timer at a cruise night grab his hand and press down on the sander, told him he was floating on the paint like a hovercraft. Rick said the guy showed him how to watch the scratch pattern in the sun, not just feel for smooth. He redid a whole fender that same weekend and said the paint took completely different, like the primer was actually biting into the metal for the first time. Now he tells everyone about it but he still catches himself going back to the old habit when he's tired.
