Rant: plastic filler I swore by for 10 years turned out to be trash
Been using Evercoat metal glaze since I started at my uncle's shop in Memphis. Swore it was the best thing for small dings. Then last month I did a side-by-side with a $15 can of Rage Gold from AutoZone and the Rage Gold sanded way smoother and didn't leave pinholes. Evercoat left me doing two extra rounds of glazing on every job. Anyone else find a brand they thought was good actually sucks compared to something cheaper?

You mentioned the side-by-side test and that really got me thinking. I had a similar wake-up call with a different product a couple years back. I used to swear by those blue shop towels for everything, thought they were the only ones that didn't leave lint. Then I grabbed a roll of the cheap red ones from the gas station one day when I was out and they actually worked just as good for half the price. Made me wonder how many other things I've been wasting money on just because I was used to them. Makes you question all those little habits you pick up over the years, doesn't it?

Man I was the exact same way with Evercoat. I used it for years because my mentor swore by it and I just figured that's how body filler was supposed to act. Did a little civic fender last spring and ran out mid job, borrowed some Bondo from my neighbor and was shocked at how much less work it was to sand smooth. Made me feel like an idiot for all those hours I spent fighting with stuff I thought was good just because I was used to it. That side by side test really opened my eyes too, sometimes you gotta break out of what you know to find out what actually works.
