Spent a morning at K&B Auto Body in Denver and noticed something that got me thinking
I was at K&B Auto Body last Tuesday picking up a tailgate I painted for a buddy. The owner there has two guys doing filler work, one is 22 and fresh out of trade school, the other is pushing 60 and learned on the job. The old timer sands everything by hand and takes twice as long, but his panels come out like glass. The younger guy uses a DA sander with 80 grit and is done in 20 minutes, but I saw him burn through the metal on a fender. Which side is right for a production shop trying to keep quality up without losing money on labor?

Old timer all day. That metal burn through on the fender is gonna cost way more than the hours saved. Gotta find a middle ground where the kid uses the DA but finishes by hand on the final passes.

Holy cow, wait, did you say burn through on the fender? That's a brutal mistake that takes forever to fix with filler work. I can't even imagine the frustration of seeing that happen after all the prep time. You make a solid point about using the DA for the heavy work though.
