That $35 plastic welder saved a bumper I almost junked

Had a 2017 Civic come in last Tuesday with a cracked lower bumper mount, right where the bracket screws in. Usually I'd quote a new cover and move on, but the customer was on a tight budget and asked if there was any other way. I grabbed a cheap plastic welder from the bargain bin at my local supplier, honest to god thought it was a gimmick. Ran some stainless mesh behind the crack and melted the rod in, took maybe 20 minutes total after prep. That bumper held up fine through a test drive and a good tug on the mount, so I charged the guy $80 for labor plus the part cost and he drove off happy. I'm curious if anyone else has had luck with those cheap welders on structural tabs, or do you always go straight to replacement? I've been burned by glue pulls before, so I'm still a bit skeptical.

Fifty bucks says I glue my own fingers together before fixing any bumper.
