That one detail from a customer changed how I sand sealer coats forever

Had a guy in Augusta last month point out tiny tiger stripes under his fender after I cleared it, and he was right, I could see them in the sunlight if I tilted the panel. He said 'why don't you just scuff it dry before the sealer flashes off' and that little tip about hitting it with 400 right after the third coat, not waiting, cut my redo rate on metallics by a lot. Any of you guys do a quick dry scuff on sealer, or was this guy just some sort of painter savant?

That dry scuff trick is legit. I had a similar issue with a silver metallic truck a couple years back, the stripes would show up right after the clear flashed and I couldnt figure out why. Started doing exactly what your customer said, a quick pass with 400 once the sealer got tacky, and it changed everything. The key is timing though, if you wait too long the sealer cures hard and the scuff just polishes it instead of cutting it. Now I keep a fresh pad right next to the gun and do it as soon as the third coat loses its wet shine. That guy knew what he was talking about, sometimes the best tips come from the guy standing next to the fender.
