The customer who watched me sand for 20 minutes straight

Had a guy in his 50s come into the shop off I-35 in Austin last month. He just stood there behind my stall watching me block sand a door panel on a silver Camry. After 15 minutes he goes 'you know, I never realized how much patience this takes. I would have thrown the tool across the room by now.' That moment stuck with me because he was quiet the whole time, just observing. Has anyone else had a customer who was genuinely curious about the process without being annoying about it?

Flip this around - that guy was probably bored out of his mind and just killing time waiting for his car. People who actually appreciate the craft don't stand there like a statue for 20 minutes without saying a word. In my experience, the ones who really get it will ask a question or two early on, maybe offer a compliment, then leave you alone. Dead silence like that usually means they're either judging your technique or spacing out because they have nothing better to do. Take that observation with a grain of salt though.

Wait, isn't that the same thing as judging their technique?

Read somewhere that people who stare at street performers without engaging are usually just waiting for something, not actually watching. Kinda tracks with what you're saying.
