Can we talk about how I was crimping D-sub pins wrong for 2 years?

For the longest time I used a cheap ratchet crimper on D-sub pins, just squeezing till it clicked. Then I did a continuity test on a harness for a King KX 155 install and got intermittent readings on half the pins. A senior tech walked over, looked at my crimp, and pointed out I was using the wrong die position for the wire gauge. I had been crushing the insulation instead of the conductor barrel on 22 AWG lines. Now I double check the die setup every time. How many of y'all learned a basic skill late that made you feel like a rookie?

Was it the die on the insulation barrel that gave you the hint, or something else that tipped you off first?

Used to think checking the die was just extra busywork, ngl. But after I got a bad crimp on a 12 AWG wire last month that pulled apart with barely any force, I realized the die marks tell you a lot. Now I look for that little number on the insulation barrel every time before I squeeze. That one mistake was enough to change my whole approach.

Yeah, it happens. Crimpers aren't rocket science, just check the die.
