Cracked connector shell on a 15 year old 737, my fault for trusting the lock ring
Last Tuesday during a preflight check on a 737-800 in Phoenix, I found a cracked shell on an ARINC 600 connector feeding the right side weather radar. The lock ring felt tight during the last inspection, but I skipped the full visual because it was 115 degrees on the ramp. Pulled it apart, sure enough the guide pin was worn down to half its width and the shell fractured along the seam. Cost us $1,200 in parts plus a 3 hour delay swapping the whole backshell assembly. Lesson hit me: that lock ring torque check means nothing if you don't look at the pin wear first. Anyone else have a connector fail because they trusted the twist instead of the eyes?
