PSA: Don't waste 600 bucks on the Fluke 1587 FC for basic bench work

I bought that fancy insulation multimeter thinking it'd save me time on avionics troubleshooting. Turns out the regular Fluke 87V does everything I need on the bench, and the 1587's extra features just sit there. Unless you're regularly testing high-voltage wiring on aircraft, stick with the cheaper option. Has anyone else found a pricey tool that was totally overkill for this trade?

Did you actually put the 1587 through its paces on any high voltage work before buying it, or did you just assume it'd be a step up from the 87V? That high-end meter seems like a specialized tool you'd only need if you're dealing with insulation testing on a regular basis. Curious if the extra cost ever paid off for anyone else in a specific situation or if it's just a money pit all around.

Extra cost ever paid off" is the key for me, yeah I got one after a motor blew and the 87V couldn't cut it for the insulation test, it saved me a ton of time not having to borrow a megger.
