Update: A chat with a retired inspector changed how I see old wiring diagrams

I was helping a guy at the hangar in Mobile sort through some old manuals for a 1982 Piper. He pointed at a faded schematic and said, 'See that dashed line? Back then, that meant a shielded run, not just any wire.' I'd been reading those diagrams wrong for ages, treating all dashed lines the same. It explains a noise issue I fought on a similar bird two months back. Has anyone else run into old notation like that giving them trouble?

Isn't that the kind of thing you only fall for once though?
