Update: my pitot heat shorted mid ramp check at KBNA and I traced it to a chafed wire bundle
Found it tucked behind the left wing root where a zip tie had rubbed through the insulation over time. Cost me 40 minutes and a $6 connector, so what is your go to trick for spotting chafe before it bites you on the line?
A zip tie rubbing through insulation is the most patient killer in aviation, I swear. My go to is a cheap bore scope from Harbor Freight and a flashlight with the lights killed in the hangar, since chafe hides way better in daylight. I also run a finger along every bundle I can reach during preflight, you feel the rough spot before you ever see it. Forty minutes and six bucks beats an in flight pitot heat failure every single time.
