Chose a potluck dish that didn't need reheating instead of one that did, saved the whole Thanksgiving

Last year my aunt's microwave broke the day before dinner and she didn't tell anyone. I brought a green bean casserole that needed warming up. Had to use the oven which was already full of turkey and rolls. Ended up eating cold casserole while everyone else had hot food. This year I'm bringing a cold salad or something from the store that's ready to eat. Anyone else have a holiday dish strategy that backfired?

Last year I brought a homemade mac and cheese that needed 20 minutes in the oven. Didn't think to check if the oven was available. It wasn't. My cousin's husband offered to microwave it but the microwave was being used to defrost the frozen pies. So I sat there eating lukewarm noodles that were basically glued together while everyone else had hot turkey and stuffing. I'm the same way this year, grabbing a store bought cold salad and calling it done. At least if it's cold it's supposed to be cold.

Did you ask anyone ahead of time if you could use the oven?

Wait, have I been doing this wrong the whole time? I used to just assume people would happily share their oven if you asked nicely, but @elizabethn56 made me realize how bad it can get. Nothing worse than sitting there with a cold lump of food while everyone else is digging in hot. Now I'm second guessing myself for every holiday potluck I've ever brought something that needed heating.
