I finally chose between hosting Christmas or going to my sister's place
Last December I had to decide - either host 14 people at my tiny apartment in Portland or drive 4 hours to my sister's house in Eugene. I picked hosting and it was a DISASTER. My Uncle Mark brought his new dog that chewed up my couch leg within 10 minutes. Has anyone else regretted taking on the family gathering instead of traveling?

The flour story reminds me of my cousin's kid who once smeared chocolate pudding all over their white couch. But a dog chewing a couch leg is a whole different level of awful because at least you can wipe off pudding. You can't really glue a couch leg back together and have it look right. Plus now your uncle probably feels bad every time he sees it, or worse, he doesn't feel bad at all and just laughs about it. That's the real kicker right there, when family watches your stuff get destroyed and acts like it's no big deal.

Heard this exact story from my buddy Dave last year. He hosted his family's Christmas dinner and his cousin's toddler somehow got into the pantry and dumped an entire bag of flour all over his kitchen floor. Took him like two hours to clean it up while his relatives just sat in the living room watching football. Said he swore he'd never do it again and just drove to his sister's this year. Still, your uncle's dog chewing the couch leg is a special kind of nightmare.

Wait, the kid really dumped a whole bag of flour? Like that's not a small mess, that's like a scene from a movie. I'd be so mad, I don't think I could just sit there and watch football after that.
