My aunt's Thanksgiving comment made me rethink my entire cooking style

She quietly asked if I'd ever tried adding salt to the water before boiling potatoes, which I never had in my 15 years of making mashed potatoes. Has anyone else had a simple tip completely change how you do a basic family recipe?

Feel you on this one. I had a similar moment when my grandma watched me peel apples for a pie and gently suggested I try leaving the skin on. Almost thirty years of peeling apples just tossed in the trash for no reason. Now my pies have that extra bit of texture and tartness that makes them actually taste like something. Sometimes the smallest tips from family hit the hardest because you realize how long you've been doing things the hard way.

Wow, that's a kitchen crime right there. Fifteen years of bland potato water is a tragedy, honestly. Your aunt just leveled up your whole life with one sentence.

Kitchen crime" is right, I felt that in my soul. So many wasted potatoes.
