My grandma handed me a fruitcake from three years ago

Last Christmas, my grandma pulls out this dusty tin from the back of her pantry and says it's a special fruitcake she made in 2021. I took a polite bite and nearly broke a tooth on a forgotten almond shell hidden inside. Has anyone else found random surprises in old holiday food that their relatives insisted was fine?

Grandma put a lot of love into that cake and you're gonna complain about a nut shell? That's seriously small stuff. People act like fruitcake is some kind of monster but it's just a dense cake that last forever. She saved that thing for you specifically because she wanted to share something from a good memory maybe. A little crunch is a small price to pay for a sweet gesture.

Wait she actually saved a fruitcake long enough to hand it down like an heirloom?

@the_lucas is right that it's kind of wild she held onto it that long, like a time capsule of baking... My own grandma once gave me a fruitcake with a whole date pit in it, so I get the crunch factor. It's sweet she thought of you, but a little warning about the hard bits would've been nice too.
